Meshkal has compiled a calendar of political, cultural, and economic events taking place in Tunis this week. No events included appear to require an entry fee except for RightsCon.
Monday, June 10:
9:00 – Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing, including testimony from the NGO Aswat Nissa (Women’s Voices) presenting their report on the application of a gender framework in security sector reform legislation, according to Aswat Nissa’s Facebook event announcement of the hearing, which will offer a live stream of the proceedings. The committee will also hear from SANAD, a regionally-oriented microfinance and SME finance fund, according to Marsad Majles, the parliamentary watchdog project of NGO Al Bawsala.
9:00? – Parliament’s Regional Development Committee is scheduled to hold a “visit”, according to the official parliamentary website.
19:00 – Exhibition of art works produced by patients at the Razi hospital for mental health during therapy workshops. The exhibition, hosted by the NGO Tunisian Activists for Mental Health is being billed as an effort to de-stigmatize mental health issues. Location: Sophonisbe cultural center, Carthage

9:00 – Full session of parliament (plenary session) is scheduled to examine: draft law No5/2019 approving an agreement with Germany for double taxation; draft law No20/2019 approving a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on sanitation; draft law No21/2019 approving an African Development Bank (AfDB) loan on sanitation, and draft law No69/2018 relating to a commission on sustainable development and future generations, according to Marsad Majles, the parliamentary watchdog project of NGO Al Bawsala.
9:00 – Opening of the International Federation of Journalists’ 30th world congress. The congress will be held until Friday, June 14 but only the first day will be open to the press. 9:00 – One-day conference on the sidelines of RightsCon on the subject of “Technology and Digitization” in Tunisia. Preregistration required via the link on the Facebook event page. Location: Laico hotel.
15:00 – Writing workshop on the theme of “Writing the Feminist Internet of Tomorrow,” a satellite event of the RightsCon in Tunis hosted by MOTIF Institute for Digital Culture in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Tunis and Jeem. 17:00 – Opening ceremony of RightsCon, an annual summit focused on digital rights and human rights that launched in 2011 in Silicon Valley and has been held in other cities around the world. 19:00 – A march is planned by the International Federation of Journalists, starting from the Mechtel Golden Tulip hotel downtown to the headquarters of the National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) in solidarity with all journalists killed in the world as a result of their profession.
19:30 – Film screening of the iconic 1927 film “Metropolis” followed by a debate. Screening is being hosted by the Goethe-Institut Tunis and the Austrian Embassy in Tunis. Location: CinéMadart, Carthage.
