Tunis Events Calendar: Week of July 8 – 14, 2019

Meshkal has compiled a calendar of political, cultural, and economic events taking place in Tunis this week. As an exception to Tunis-based events, included in this week’s events calendar are the schedules of matches for Tunisia’s men’s national football team taking place in Egypt as part of the Africa Cup of Nations. No Tunis events included appear to require an entry fee.

Monday, July 8:

9:30 –  Parliament’s Health and Social Affairs Committee is holding a meeting to examine draft law No41/2019 relating to patients’ rights, according to Marsad Majles, the parliamentary watchdog project of NGO Al Bawsala.

10:00 – A demonstration has been organized in protest of the so-called “deal of the century” proposed by the current US administration concerning Israel and Palestine and normalization of relations with Israel. The main organizers appear to be several labor unions under the umbrella of the UGTT. The demonstration comes after US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner launched a conference on the initiative in Bahrain in late June. A demonstration against the conference in front of the Bahrain’s embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, prompted Bahrain to recall its ambassador. 10:00 – Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense is holding a hearing with the director of customs, according to Marsad Majles, the parliamentary watchdog project of NGO Al Bawsala.

10:00 – Creative Digital Lab is hosting their ¨Creative VFX Days¨ event Monday and Tuesday for film directors, producers and editors interested in developing their visual effects skills. Location: Culture City.

18:30 – Columbia Global Centers Tunis is hosting a screening of the film “Nhebbek Hedi” and a discussion with the main actor Majd Mastoura. Location: Columbia Global Centers Tunis, 15 Avenue de Carthage

18:30 – The Institut français de Tunisie is hosting a ¨master class¨ in the composition of electronic music called ¨Electronic Reflections with AWB and Simo Cell¨. Advance reservation required via email to neuviemeruche@gmail.com. Location: Institut français de Tunisie

20:00 – Tunisia’s men’s national football team will be facing Ghana in the round of 16 Africa Cup of Nations (match is taking place in Egypt).

Tuesday, July 9:

Wednesday, July 10:

10:30 – A conference presenting a guidebook for journalists on how to report on the issue of migration is being hosted by the International Organization for Migration. Location: Sheraton Hotel

Thursday, July 11:

8:30 – The Arab Institute of Business Executives (IACE by its French acronym) is hosting a conference on the topic of “transfer pricing policy” which relates to a tax avoidance method used by multinational companies. Location: La Maison de l’Entreprise, Lac 1.

9:00 – A public discussion is scheduled on the challenges of political participation for people with disabilities, hosted by Ibsar. Registration in advance required. Location: Hotel Hana International

17:00 – If Tunisia’s men’s national football team have beaten Ghana in their Monday match, they will be facing off against Madagascar in the quarter finals (match is taking place in Egypt).

Friday, July 12:

8:30 – The launch of a two-day workshop has been scheduled on the topic of “Youth and Civic and Political Participation in the Face of the Phenomenon of Extremism in Tunis,” hosted by the Washington DC-based organization the Hollings Center and an organization called the “United Voices Association.” Location: Mechtel Golden Tulip Hotel.
