Tunis Events Calendar: Week of July 22 – 28, 2019

Meshkal has compiled a calendar of political, cultural, and economic events taking place in Tunis this week. No Tunis events included appear to require an entry fee. Some events are announced during the week and so may not be included at the time the events calendar is published.

Monday, July 22:

8:00 – Tunisia’s High Independent Electoral Authority (ISIE by its French acronym) begins accepting candidate lists from political parties who are running in the legislative elections scheduled for October 6, 2019, according to ISIE’s vice president Farouk Bouasker speaking to the state news agency TAP.

9:00? – Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense is holding a hearing on an unspecified topic at an unspecified time, according to the official parliamentary website.

17:30 – Book discussion with writer and journalist Hedi Yahmed on his book “The Day They Came to Arrest Me, On Secrecy, Exiles, and the Mornaguiya Prison,” hosted by the Tunisia Office of the Center for Middle East Studies (CMES) at Harvard University. Tuesday, July 23:

9:00? – Parliament’s Elections Committee is holding a meeting on an unspecified topic at an unspecified time, according to the official parliamentary website.

16:00 – A workshop on youth and political participation is being hosted by the NGO Jahedh Forum. Registration in advance required via a Google doc form. Location: Douar Hicher public “Youth House”.

19:30 – A “Human Rights Cinema Evening” is being hosted by the “Tunisian Cultural Association for Integration and Training” (ACTIF by its French acronym). The night will feature a showing of four films, one each from Tunisia, Jordan, Belgium and Afghanistan. Location: El Teatro, Belvedere

Wednesday, July 24:

17:30 – Book discussion with novelist and professor Chokri Mabkhout on his book “Bourguiba’s Sons: A History of Apostasy Accusations in Tunisia [Part 2],” hosted by the Tunisia Office of the Center for Middle East Studies (CMES) at Harvard University. 18:30 – Carthagina, an NGO dedicated to preserving Tunisian heritage, is hosting a treasure hunt in the Medina. Those wishing to attend and discover more details are asked to send an email to Carthagina.tunisia@gmail.com

Thursday, July 25:

10:00 – A discussion remembering former legislator Mohamed Brahmi, assassinated on this day in 2013 at the height of a political crisis. Location: Hotel Africa.

Friday, July 26:

16:30 – A “tutorial for citizens” on the topic of “how to evaluate a political party” is being led by Sami Bahri, whose biography describes him as the advisor to the “president of the National Constituent Assembly [the temporary legislative authority that governed Tunisia from 2011 to 2014]” and secretary general of the dimo:qratiyoun association. The Facebook event is in French and does not indicate what language the event will be held in. Location: Saf Saf, La Marsa.
