Tunis Events Calendar: Week of April 15 – April 21, 2019

Meshkal has compiled a list of some of the announced political, educational, and cultural events taking place in Tunis this week. From political conferences, policy debates, and labor strikes to film screenings, lectures, and plays, Meshkal will try to keep its readers informed on what’s happening in Tunisia’s capital every week.

Monday, April 15:

9:00 to 17:00 April 16 – Strike planned in the state’s social security sector, according to an April 14 announcement at night by the main labor union the UGTT on its official Facebook website.

18:30 – Launch of Institut français de Tunisie (IFT) second edition of Couleurs d’Avril (Colors of April) celebrating personal freedoms, focusing specifically on the rights of LGBTQI++ people. Colors of April lasts until Saturday, April 20. For a full program of events: https://bit.ly/2Ug5WoV

Tuesday, April 16:

9:30 – Seminar “La Parole aux Paysannes” (Giving Voice to the Peasants) as part of daylong “Journée des luttes paysannes” (Day of Peasant Struggles) organized by OSAE Observatoire de la Souveraineté Alimentaire et de l’Environnement (The Observatory for Food and Environmental Sovereignty). Location: Hotel Majestic. Program lasts until 16:00

18:30 – Screening of the film Landless Moroccans, directed by Soraya El Kahlaoui, followed by a debate. Part of “Journée des luttes paysannes” organized by OSAE. Location: Le 4éme art.

Wednesday, April 17:

17:30 – Presentation of new publication “La Conquête de l’Algérie : la dernière campagne d’Abd el-Kader,” by Jacques Fréaux, professor at l’Université Paris IV Sorbonne. Location: Institut de Recherche sur le Maghreb Contemporain (IRMC).

Thursday, April 18:

9:00? – Hearing of Judicial Financial Division scheduled in case of businessman Chafik Jarraya accused of alleged fraud, according to official state news agency TAP.

14:00 to 17:00 – Study day on “Budget governance in public financing”, hosted by INLUCC (the National Anti-Corruption Authority) and the “Arab Center for Research and Political Studies in Tunisia. Registration link: https://bit.ly/2KCY40Z . Location: Hotel Acropole, Lac 1.

17:30 – Seminar led by Jocelyne Dakhlia, historian, anthropologist, and director of studies at Centre de recherches historiques (CRH-École des hautes études en sciences sociales [EHESS]). Seminar entitled: “Le Harem sultanien en mouvement : logique d’État et mobilités féminines au Maghreb (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles)”. Location: Institut de Recherche sur le Maghreb Contemporain (IRMC).

18:00 – Meeting of Aswat Nissa’s third Feminist Book Club, discussing the book “Nos Silences” by Algerian writer Wahiba Khiari. Location: 03 rue Bassora, Lafayette, Tunis.

15:00 – Second National Conference of the National Current (Attayar al-Demokrati) political party. Location: Palais de Congrès

17:00 – Screening of films in “Envirofest” environmental film festival. Location: L’Ecole Polytechnique de Tunisie in La Marsa.

Saturday, April 20

10:00 – Screening of films in “Envirofest” environmental film festival. Location: L’Ecole Polytechnique de Tunisie in La Marsa.

19:30 – Showing of the play “La Fuite,” by playwright Ghazi Zaghbani, which tells the story of a religious extremist forced to share a room with a prostitute. Location: L’Artisto.

Sunday, April 21
